VILLA SOPHIA – GARDENER’S COTTAGE ยท Hillsborough, CA
A guest cottage situated on the grounds of a restored, historically significant, 1927 house. As part of the ongoing project to breathe new life and purpose into the faded grandeur of an old estate the unused tennis court was converted into a vegetable and flower garden with a new one bedroom cottage built along one side. The cottage and gardens create a secluded and verdant world in a formerly forgotten corner of the property. The design of the building recalls a small house the owners shared years before and echoes the modest, casual, agricultural buildings of an earlier time in California.
Exterior materials include reclaimed clay tile, painted shiplap cladding and brick paving. The cottage is small in scale and set low to the ground to for a backdrop to the landscape design by Lisa Keyston, Landscape Architect.
